Child birth

Baby...

It brings immense joy when a baby is born. Here you can find some of the bureaucracy stuff that should be taken care.

Pregnancy

As soon as you have the symptom, consult the nearby Frauen Arzte. They give mutter pass, which you should carry on every doctor visit.

3rd month

It's time to get an appointment from Hebamme. It is sometimes difficult to get an appointment from Hebamme, so better to contact them and tell the expected delivery date. When they are available, they accept to visit you after the child is born.

8th month

Call a hospital where they also take care of delivering baby. Tell them that you want to register for baby birth (entbinden), they give an appointment. Take the mutterpass with you for the appointment. You will undergo ultrasound scan and probably some advice regarding the baby birth. From now on, you can go to this hospital regarding any delivery related emergency.

Note: Prefer multi-specialty hospital if there is one available. Reason: In-case of any complication on the child, the child will be transported to the multi-specialty hospital. Then the mother will be in a hospital and the child is in different hospital, making it not so easy for baby feeding an so on.

9th month

Advent days are exciting! Generally in Germany, the baby's surname can either the surname of the dad or surname of the mom. E.g: Dad name: Murali Mohan, Mom name: Chithra Raman. The child's surname can either be Mohan or Raman.

There are couple of ways to have dad's first name as baby's surname.
  1. If you have an opportunity, change wife's surname in the passport. In the above example, mom's passport reads as Chithra Murali. Then things will be fine.
  2. Get a no objection certificate from Indian consulate. Follow this linkNo Objection for Newborn Name. It takes about 2-3 weeks to get the document.

Delivery

Medical facilities in Germany is well sophisticated, they try all the means to have natural birth for the baby. We stayed in the hospital for three days including the day of birth. All the necessary things were provided, staff were rather nice. From the time of admission to the hospital till the discharge time, we paid nothing. All services were paid by the insurance.

Birth certificate (Geburtsurkunde)

Within 7 days of child birth, the baby name should be registered in Standesamt. You can submit the form in the hospital itself OR it can be applied directly to Standesamt. The following documents are needed.
  • Birth certificate of both the parents [original]
  • Marriage certificate [original]
  • Passport and visa of both the parents  [original]
  • Birth document from the hospital
  • No objection certificate if required

Support from State (Money)

German federal state supports for upbringing of child. The following is applicable for only one parent is working and the other has no employment at the time of child birth. The non-working parent opts 12 months of basis elternzeit.

Kindergeld: 219€ per month, for the first 18 years of child's life.

Elterngeld (Non working parent): 300€ per month for the applied elternzeit period (12 months)

Familiengeld: 250€ per month from 13th month of child birth until 36th month (24 months)

Indian Passport

Because of corona, Indian Consulate Munich encourages postal applications for all passport related services. The process is well explained in the official website. I have sent all the necessary documents (only the photocopies were asked) and one self addressed medium size envolope with €4.50 stamp. I was positively surprised how fast the embassy processes a request! The passport was received on the 11-th business day!!!

Fee structure (as on 09-Nov-2021)

  • Birth registration: €27.00
  • Issue of passport: €42.00
